CHARACTER INFO
NAME:
Hitachiin Kaoru
CANON: Ouran High School Host Club (Manga)
REFERENCE LINKS: Bam.
CHARACTER INFO: Hitachiin Kaoru is one of a set of identical twin brothers with codependency levels through the roof. Raised in an environment where even their own parents can't tell them apart, they began to shut themselves away from the world at a very young age until, eventually, they'd alienated all but their close family. However, that all began to change when Suoh Tamaki, a fellow rich idiot, recruited the two of them to mack on fine rich ladies in the name of a school club. Thanks to him and a scholarship student that joined the club later on, the twins began to expand their world bit by bit again. The strongest blow came when they discovered that Haruhi, the scholarship student, could actually tell the two of them apart consistently.

Since then, the twins have both begun to let their own individual personalities shine at the forefront more and more. They're still very similar of course! Together they both are notorious mischief makers who love playing pranks on anyone unfortunate enough to cross their paths (friend and stranger alike) and pursue anything they want or like with no care at all for other people. (So long as no serious harm is actually being done, that is. They do have limits!) Both are also fiercely protective and possessive of things or people that are "theirs" as well, and they'll always care for each other the most.

However! Kaoru displays some of these traits in a way different than his brother, and he has a number of traits all his own. For example, even something as simple as their mischief making is an area where differences can shine. Kaoru handles the bulk of the planning and strategizing for the more complex schemes they get up to. He works out all the fine details to ensure plans go off without a hitch, working out how to manipulate their marks into acting just as they want them to. It's a talent that he uses in other areas too! For example, using his extensive knowledge of the kind of person his brother is to try to manipulate him into growing separately from him so that he can become more of an individual and recognize romantic feelings he has for Haruhi. Of course, part of that plan involved making Hikaru believe he hated him, but hey! It was for his own good. :)

Manipulation doesn't end with pranks or attempting serious changes at the way he and his brother live their lives though. He often employs it for simple things like getting a friend to spend the day with them; things that could be accomplished simply by asking. Basically, while he can be blunt and direct about things like how unfashionable someone is, or how ridiculous he thinks they're behaving, when it comes to asking for things he wants from them it just strikes him as easier to trick them into doing it. Because he's been disappointed by people for so long (re: never being able to differentiate between the twins) he has trouble assuming anyone will live up to any expectations or hopes he might have. Manipulation just comes more naturally to him.

Kaoru also tends to ignore his own needs in favor of the people most important to him. In canon this is really just Hikaru and maybe veeeerry occasionally another member of the club. When he tries to trick his brother into separating from him it isn't really what he wants, but what he thinks Hikaru needs, for example. Thinking in terms of what he wants for himself is just something he has difficulty doing without prompting.

Finally, he's also the more restrained and considerate of the two brothers. It certainly isn't that he likes people more than his brother. Not at all! He's just more socially and emotionally mature than Hikaru is and uses those skills to their mutual benefit. If a prank is getting out of control, it's likely Kaoru who gives a signal to pull things back into line. If they've genuinely offended a friend, it's Kaoru who pushes for his brother to calm down and apologize. He keeps their antics from crossing into truly unforgivable behavior and at the same time works to gently guide his brother into growing into a more functional person, bit by bit.

CONSIDERATIONS: Obviously the biggest change will be that he'll lack the codependency with Hikaru. Even if I start him with a memory of Hikaru, he won't remember the literal lifetime of time where he was never apart from him for more than an hour or two at the most. Hikaru will just be another guy and he won't have the pressing need to maintain a close bond with him, at least initially. He also will not be so distrustful of other people. The twins were reluctant to let people into their world because even their own parents were unable to tell them apart and that led to them deciding other people weren't worth their time. If someone couldn't tell them apart, why bother dealing with them? Since Kaoru doesn't remember that being a thing, and because wearing a different color than Hikaru will likely prevent confusion in Aather, he probably won't develop that disdain for other people and will be able to form connections without making them jump through quite so many hoops first.

As for things he'll retain . . . In Kaoru's case, many of the traits he "learned" are ones I am in favor of him keeping. He and his brother are identical and received the same nurturing while growing up, so I lean towards the belief that the personality traits unique to him are just part of his nature. His manipulative tendencies and the way he puts his most important people before himself or shows a little more restraint in social settings are all things he'll keep even lacking his memories. They might not be as prominent until he regains more memories, but they will definitely be there to some degree.

Introduce yourself in a few sentences

Hitachiin Kaoru at your service, princess. Or is it Hikaru? Do you think you can guess which one I really am?

"The suffering of a few is okay if it benefits a great many" -- do you agree with this sentiment? Why or why not?

What a serious question . . . it depends on who's benefiting, doesn't it? And what kind of suffering and benefits we're talking about here. Anyway, this is really a question better suited to Kyouya. Determining this sort of thing is his specialty.

What event from your past has impacted you the most? Please describe.

Probably . . . meeting Tamaki. If it weren't for him and his club, then nothing would've ever gotten started. We'd still be in the same place we were the first day he spoke to us.

If you were a kind of food item, what item would you be and why?

A maple and sea salt cookie. For no reason other than it's my favorite kind.

Three things you're good at?

Only three? Well, the most important one to remember is clothing design. We're not as talented as our mother yet, but by the time we've graduated we'll be ready to put our mark on the Hitachiin line. We also excel in flower arrangement, make up application, graphic design . . . All forms of visual artistry. But my favorite talent is playing pranks. They're the quickest way to turn a dull and boring day into a bright memory for our amusement.

Three things you're not so good at?

Do I have to think of three? I suppose for the first . . . understanding commoners. We've made a great deal of progress thanks to Haruhi, but it seems there's always something new to learn about. They have such ingenuity! Second . . . well, I'm not as good at math as my brother, but my grades are still passing. And for the third thing, I don't have as much "presence" as my mother. If I don't strive to make more of an impact, I might become a shadow character like my father! I don't even want to imagine it!

Do you believe in soulmates or love at first sight?

Love at first sight is a silly children's tale, but soulmates? I believe in that. It doesn't even have to be romantic. My brother and I are two perfect halves of one whole, so doesn't that make us soulmates?

"Killing criminals is okay if they've committed a grave crime" -- do you agree with this? Why or why not?

How grave? Aren't these questions kind of vague? You have to be more specific! I guess if it's someone who's never going to change . . . but no, even thinking about cruel dictators or serial killers, I don't want to just kill them. Why do we have jails if we aren't going to use them to house evil people like that?

Do you consider yourself a strong person? Why or not why?

Fairly strong. As I said before, I need to keep striving to always make a stronger impact if I don't want to turn out like my father, but I think I'm doing well. I'm able to bear a lot of things and make difficult choices even if they're frightening. That's what being strong is, isn't it?

What magic power would you have and why? If you already have a magic power, if your magic power was taken away from you how would you compensate?

Shapeshifting. My brother and I already have fun with no one being able to tell us apart, so just imagine how much more interesting things would become if we could look like anything at all!

Free section: (Please put something which you think symbolizes you or is otherwise important to you)

The most important thing in the world to me is my dear twin, Hikaru. I can say with absolute confidence that neither of us would be the people we are today without each other's influence. Even more than that, the world wouldn't have treated us the way it did if we'd been one child instead of two, and I would never want that to be changed for anything. I like where we are now. And I like knowing I'll always have Hikaru there to depend on when I need him. I love my brother, and I'm thankful every day that I have him at all.
